Crossover relationships between actors, athletes, and different cultures aren’t rare, but every once in a while, you wonder just how those two met.

And one of those couples from the early 1990s was Tupac Shakur and Madonna.

It was in 1993, and Rosie Perez was at the height of her career playing in classics like Do the Right Thing and White Men Can’t Jump when she was en route to the Soul Train Awards and realized her date was a no-show because he didn’t want to be spotted by his girlfriend.

Perez revealed on The Drew Berrymore Show that, as anyone would, Shakur stepped up and offered to accompany her, pettily making her date jealous if he did make an appearance.

“He said, ‘You know what, I’m gonna go with you, we’re gonna walk up in there, we’re gonna act like we’re on a date, and he’s going to die,’” she recalled.

Only Perez’s dating life got the boost that night; it was Pac’s. While at the festivities, Madonna approached Perez about the West Coast rapper, wondering if she could make her move or if he was off-limits.

“She was there and she came up to me and she was like, ‘Yo, what’s up? Y’all are together?’” Perez explained. “And I said, ‘No.’ She goes, ‘Really?’ I go, ‘Yeah.’”

Madonna swooped in, and Perez agreed to “hook her up.”

The relationship didn’t last long, as they dated briefly between 1993 and 1995. Plus, much about the fling isnt known– even Madonna didn’t confirm it until a 2015 interview on the  The Howard Stern Show when she was asked about why she had an attitude during a David Letter appearance in the early 1990s.

“I was dating Tupac Shakur at the time, and the thing is … he got me all riled up on life in general,” she told Stern.

More was revealed after TMZ unearthed a letter that the rapper wrote to Madonna explaining he broke up with her because she was white.

“For you to be seen with a black man wouldn’t in any way jeopardize your career, if anything it would make you seem that much more open and exciting. But for me, at least in my previous perception, I felt due to my ‘image’ I would be letting down half of the people who made me what I thought I was,” he wrote. “I never meant to hurt you.”

Pac wasn’t the first time Madonna dated outside of her race. See a list below
