A person has been arrested in connection with a shooting at Tuskegee University that left one person dead and injured at least 16.
Twelve people were wounded by gunshots while four others sustained injuries unrelated to the gun, reports CNN.
Jaquez Myrick, 25, was taken into custody and charged with possession of a machine gun after allegedly shooting up the school at 1:40 a.m. as the University was wrapping up homecoming festivities.
It was later revealed that the one person killed on campus was 18-year-old Troy, Alabama, native Latavion Johnson, and was not a student.
“Tuskegee University confirms that a shooting occurred on campus early Sunday morning, Nov. 10, resulting in the death of a non-university individual. The parents of this individual have been notified,” the University said in a statement. “Several others including Tuskegee University students were injured and are receiving treatment at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery.”
The university has reopened, and students are asked to resume activities on campus but are told to avoid the West Commons area where the shooting took place, as the scene is now part of an active investigation. However, classes were canceled Monday, and students were provided grief counselors and encouraged to contact police if they have information regarding the shooting.
As the Alabama Bureau of Investigations is continuing to investigate, Mark Brown, president and CEO of Tuskegee University released a statement about the weekend’s tragedy.
“I now ask that you would join me in a brief moment of silence as we reflect on the lost soul and the parents, family members and friends that grieve, the concerns of all those parents who have children here, for the safety of their students and our students and faculty who may also grieve at this moment,” Brown said.
