It looks like SZA will be joining Kendrick Lamar for the Super Bowl halftime show this year. Lamar is the headline performer at the game, featuring the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles for Super Bowl LIX in a rematch on Sunday, Feb. 9 in New Orleans.
In a teaser trailer, Kendrick is seen on a football field talking on the phone. “Yeah, everything’ smooth. I’m on the field,” he says to an unknown person on the other end. “You know, the same old, keeping the body in motion, getting that wind up,” as a group of people shot from the legs down walks onto the field in unison. “You know this field is a lot bigger than people think so that’s a must.”
As he continues the call, SZA appears in the shot, sneaking up on Lamar with a bucket filled with Gatorade-looking liquid. As she gets to him and splashes him, the clip goes to stop-action before we see him getting wet and then it ends.
SZA, who once recorded for Lamar’s Top Dawg Entertainment, is heading out with Lamar on The Grand National Tour which begins in Minneapolis on April 19, going through to Washington. D.C. on June 18. She’s coming off the hit girl buddy film One of Them Days with KeKe Palmer and is on Lamar’s latest release GNX, which came out in November. SZA’s Lana released in December, is an updated reissue of her 2022 album SOS.
Lamar and SZA have had two hits together – “All of the Stars” from the Black Panther soundtrack and “Doves in the Wind.” They’re likely to do at least one of those together but whether or not Lamar will perform “Not Like Us, ” is still up in the air.
While Drake dismissed the lawsuit that claimed his own distribution label, Universal Music Group, also Lamar’s label, conspired with Spotify to inflate Lamar’s streams of the song, he filed a new lawsuit claiming WMG defamed him by distributing the song. “Not Like Us” was Lamar’s viral response to “Family Matters” in an ongoing rap beet between the two men that is now personal as well.
