Dwyane Wade‘s always chopping it up with fellow sports stars, fashion moguls, and business magnates on his The Why With Dwyane Wade platform, but in his most recent episode, he opened up about a health scare he suffered back in 2023.

In December 2023, Wade revealed that he noticed he had constant cramps and weak urination when he decided to go to the doctor and get his routine physical inspired by his father, Dwyane Wade Sr.’s, battle with prostate cancer.

Telling cohost Bob Metelus, Wade’s doctor ordered him to get a full body scan, which is when he found a growth on his right kidney. He sought several medical professionals’ opinions after ultimately choosing to get the cancerous lump removed.

However, he revealed there was no way to get it biopsied; it just had to be removed, around the 15:30-minute mark.

“I had a personal decision to make. And what it was was, if this is cancerous, if this tumor, this cyst, is cancerous on your kidney, you’re 41 years old. You probably need surgery, so it’s something that needs to be removed so it doesn’t spread,” Wade said. “I made the decision to have surgery. I had surgery on December 18, 2023.”

He later learned that once removed, it was, in fact, cancerous, and the surgery to remove 40% of his right kidney was successful.

The Miami Heat legend remembers the first time his family saw him in a fragile state, but they rallied around him when he needed them most.

“I think it was the first time my family, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak. That moment was probably the weakest point I’ve ever felt in my life. The moments I was by myself, I was struggling,” Wade continued. “Fortunately for me, my family got in, they jumped in. And what I saw, in the midst of that, and me going through my illness. I saw everybody show up for me and be there for me. In that process, in my weakness, I found strength in my family, in my friends, in my group.”
