The Home Depot Retool Your School program is transforming Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the country, one grant at a time. Since its launch in 2009, the program has empowered HBCUs with the resources they need to enhance their campuses and create spaces where both students and faculty can thrive.

Johnson C. Smith University

Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) is one of many HBCUs to benefit from the annual grant. The Charlotte, North Carolina, institution used its Retool Your School funding to refresh various campus areas, including the Family Dollar Room. The communal space received a well-deserved upgrade, becoming versatile and inviting and ready to host a variety of student events—from study groups and team tryouts to game nights and casual hangouts.

Reshaping HBCUs one project at a time

For 16 years, The Home Depot has been reshaping HBCU campuses nationwide through the Retool Your School program, funding upgrades that enhance student life. This program is about more than improving physical spaces—it’s about creating environments that inspire students to dream bigger. By revitalizing classrooms, study areas, student lounges, and much more, each grant enables HBCUs to create spaces where students can thrive.

With each grant, campuses are transformed, turning vision into real impact, one project at a time. Retool Your School helps foster community and honor each school’s rich legacy, as institutions that have nurtured innovation, growth, and leadership for generations.

The Home Depot Retool Your School program is about more than financial support; it’s about bringing the campus community together. “It’s amazing how a renovation can bring people together and create opportunities for community development,” said Anthony Brown, JCSU alum and faculty member.
