The death of Southern University student Caleb Wilson has taken another turn as the initial reports of how and where he died have changed.
Initially, outlets reported that the 20-year-old collapsed while at a Baton Rouge-area park during an off-campus event while pledging for Omega Psi Phi.
Now, it turns out the story was made up, and his death actually happened at a Baton Rouge warehouse when he was repeatedly punched in the chest until he collapsed. WAFB reports that nine pledges in attendance were lined up for an “unsanctioned” frat event that included getting struck, which is when things turned dark for Wilson upon the violent tradition.
“When Wilson was hit, sources with knowledge of the events said he reportedly collapsed to the ground and began having a seizure at the warehouse,” WAFB writes.
The frat brothers then brought his body to a nearby hospital, Baton Rouge General. After he was pronounced dead, they then headed off to another location, which is where they came up with the fabricated story about him collapsing at the park despite none of them ever actually going there.
Wilson was a trumpeter for Southern University’s renowned Human Jukebox marching band, which the school’s music program noted in a Facebook post about his passing.
“With heavy hearts, we share the devastating loss of one of our own, Caleb Wilson, a beloved member of the Southern University Human Jukebox and an incredible part of our Jaguar family,” the statement begins. “A talented trumpet player, a dedicated student, and a bright soul, Caleb was a mechanical engineering major who poured his passion into both his studies and his time with the Human Jukebox. His energy, spirit, and impact on those around him will never be forgotten.”
All Greek and student organizations have suspended membership activities on campus amid the ongoing investigations. Although an autopsy has been performed, a cause of death has not been uncovered as more testing has been ordered.
