Critics have yet to see Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s upcoming vampire horror flick Sinners, but legendary director Spike Lee has, and he is already praising the film.
Spike Lee, who has classic films like Do The Right Thing and Malcolm X, praised Coogler and Jordan’s highly anticipated horror film, which arrives in theaters April 18. He said he had “the greatest experience of watching a film in years.”
The film features Michael B. Jordan doing double the acting as he plays twin brothers Elijah and Elias Smoke in 1930s Mississippi who return home looking for a fresh start but instead find themselves dealing with a great evil and other supernatural forces.
“My brother Ryan Coogler invited me to experience his new film Sinners (in IMAX). His magnificent artistry as a storyteller iz on a annudder’ level. And y’now brother Michael B. Jordan did his ‘THANG, THANG’,” Lee wrote in the caption for his post featuring a photo of himself and Ryan Coogler standing in front of a poster for the film.
He continued, “Da Performances, Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, Original Score, Songs, Visual Effects are DOPE, and what else ya want?” adding that he hadn’t “felt this way in a movie theater in a minute.”
“He really tapped into our ancestors on this joint, AND DAT’S DA BLACK CINEMATIC POWER.”
That’s some high praise right there.
Ryan Coogler Breaksdown His Complex Vampire Flick
Sinners recently got a new trailer and more of an explanation from Coogler about the film’s premise during a trailer premiere event.
“The film is very genre-fluid,” Coogler explained. “It switches in and out of a lot of different genres. Yes, vampires are an element, but it’s not the only supernatural element in the movie. The film is about more than just that.”
The film will not only tackle supernatural horror but the real-life terror known as racism as the movie takes place during the Jim Crow South era.
Jordan is joined in the film by an all-star lineup that includes Hailee Steinfeld, Delroy Lindo, Jack O’Connell, and the latest Hello Beautiful digital cover star, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, and Omar Miller.
Spike Lee got us even more hyped for Sinners.
