Last week, the basketball world was shaken by the news that Alijah Arenas, the son of NBA legend Gilbert Arenas, and a five-star recruit who committed to USC this year, crashed his Tesla Cybertruck into a fire hydrant and a tree, leaving his vehicle in flames on the side of the road in a Los Angeles neighborhood. Well, according to TMZ Sports, Arena’s family released a statement Wednesday revealing that the high school basketball star is out of the hospital and is “now resting comfortably under close watch.”

“The Govan and Arenas family are preparing for the road ahead with faith and determination, committed to nurturing Alijah back to 100%. He remains blessed, resilient, and in high spirits,” the statement reads.

TMZ noted that the statement did not mention or discuss Arenas’ future in basketball, making it clear that the family is focused on his recovery, physical and otherwise. The statement also doesn’t go into detail about how extensive the 18-year-old’s injuries are, although the latest reports suggested they weren’t extensive at all.

Arenas’ father, Gilbert, posted a video of Alijah being welcomed home with cake and balloons, noting in the caption that he is “Truly grateful to everyone for the prayers, love, and support during his healing. Much love.”

Initial reports about the accident sparked rumors that the crash left Arenas in a coma, but later, Sports Illustrated‘s Tarek Fattal tweeted and update revealing that he “inhaled a lot of smoke” but “suffered no major bodily injuries.” As we previously reported, the Los Angeles Fire Department, which answered the call about the crash at around 4:55 a.m. that day, confirmed that Arenas suffered no broken bones. Considering the fact that photos and video footage from the crash circulated around social media shortly after the event, concerned fans likely welcomed the news that Arenas’ condition isn’t as dire as first reported.

We wish Alijah Arenas a full and speedy recovery.

Be safe out there, y’all.
