J. Period is a legend in these hip-hop streets and social media timelines when it comes to crafting masterful mixtapes that stay in your memory years on. And this time around, he’s honoring Atlanta royalty OutKast, and the cultural juggernaut that is Black Panther on a new mixtape, hand-delivered exclusively to CASSIUS.

J. Period Presents… #WakandaForeverEver kicks off with a special flight announcement, preparing for liftoff in Stankonia, headed non-stop to Wakanda. The project blends two supersonic worlds: OutKast’s Atlien incessant classic album Stankonia, and the Afro-futuristic bombast of the Black Panther soundtrack produced by Pulitzer Prize winner Kendrick Lamar.

It takes a certain ear to sync Outkast’s instantly recognizable “B.O.B.” with pretty much anything, but J. Period does it seamlessly with “Bloody Waters” from Black Panther The Album, slowing down that traditionally Stankonia headbanging nod to a mellow one. The combination works musically but also with the messaging. Both projects make us feel powerful, politically-charged, and unapologetically proud to be young and Black in America. Andre 3000 and Big Boi’s work inside the studio defined the moves of a generation and made it cool to rep the Dirty South life it never left. With the massive impact of Black Panther, multiple generations are getting to witness African excellence, making all proud to rep the Diaspora that seemed to get lost, overlooked and neglected in Hollywood’s consciousness.

If you’re familiar with J. Period’s work, welcome back. But if this is your first go-round, you’ll have to check out his reworking of OutKast’s 1994 Southern Playalistic. His ear has remixed the likes of Lauryn Hill, James Brown, Kanye West and Michael Jackson. When he paired up with Lin Manuel, the worlds of hip-hop and Broadway were flipped in the best of ways with Hamilton The Mixtape. The project featured the likes of Alicia Keys, Busta Rhymes, The Roots, Kelly Clarkson and Joell Ortiz, among countless others. Needless to say, Hamilton The Mixtape debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in 2016.
