Missy Elliott to (Finally) Receive MTV's Video Vanguard Award

Missy Elliott is one of the greatest Hip-Hop artists of all-time, and it’s most definitely not up for debate.

Finally, MTV is giving her the recognition she deserves with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at this year’s Video Music Awards.

She took to Instagram to reveal the news, captioning the video, “I am Humbly Grateful to be receiving the MichaelJacksonVideoVanguard Award😭🙏🏾❤️ I Thank my FANS “Supafriends” who fought diligently to see this day come🙏🏾 @KidFury@crissles who rooted for years!❤️I am crying right now so thankful 😭 I didn’t know if I would ever receive this but I want y’all to know I do not take it for Granted I am GRATEFUL @atlanticrecords @monascottyoungThank you Dear God!!! @MTV @vmasam SO HUMBLED🙏🏾 #VA hometeam! two up two down❤️ lastly the WHOLE DANCE COMMUNITY❤️🙏🏾”

For some unexplainable reason she doesn’t get the credit she’s due for penning some of the biggest hits of the last few decades. She is a five-time Grammy Award winner and the first female hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She’s sold more than 30 million records worldwide as the only female rapper to have 6 platinum albums.

All of those hits don’t come without music videos, and Missy’s were some of the most creative across any genre. As if that’s not great enough news, Missy will perform at the award show for the first time in 16 years. It’s all going down on August 26, and if we know Missy we know we can expect a viral-worthy performance to compliment the award she so rightfully deserves.
