Since changing his focus to part-time First Take host and putting more energy into his Club Shay Shay platform, Shannon Sharpe‘s viral clips have only garnered more views as he continues to book high-profile guests.

The latest to sit across from him was legendary comedian Damon Wayans Sr., who, as expected, offered up many hilarious stories from his time in Hollywood dating back over several decades.

One of those stories was even pretty personal because of the awkwardness he could only blame himself for.

It began in 2001, when he finally settled his divorce from Lisa Thorner, ending their 16-year marriage. After a break, he hopped right back into dating, but he didn’t quite realize just how small Cali’s dating pool was.

“I got divorced and I was by myself for two years,” Wayans recalled. “And then I saw [my nephew’s ex] and I was just like, ‘Oh my God. I’m in love.’”

After figuring out his nephew had dated her, he reached out to him, and they agreed it was cool for him to pursue a relationship with her.

“I’m like, you know, ‘What’s up?’ and he’s like, ‘That’s you.’ And I’m like, ‘Okay, pass the Courvoisier, let’s go!’ And I went ahead and I fell in love, and it was okay,” Wayans said.

Wayans didn’t reveal which of his nephews it was, but with nine siblings —many of whom are also comedians— he admits that some family gatherings were pretty awkward.

Sharpe admits that he could never date someone a family member had already been with, but Wayans pleads his case because his nephew wasn’t in love with her. He promises Sharpe he would change his mind if he’d seen how attractive she was and her cooking skills, and he jokingly alludes to “other things” she did.

Elsewhere in the near-three-hour conversation, Wayans also spoke about his early beef with Mike Tyson because of jokes made at the heavyweight champ’s expense. Tyson responded by biting him in the neck and threatening to beat him up. It wasn’t until Tsyon ran into Wayan’s mom at an event that he changed his tune.

Mike Tyson was like, ‘I fell in love with your family right there. If anything ever happens with you and your family, I’m going to eat through people,” Wayans said.
