Demar DeRozan’s Sacramento Kings may have been booted in the Play-In tournament, but that doesn’t mean his spring is any less eventful.
Now that his season is over, he was in his home state of California, enjoying dinner at Yume Sushi in Calabasas on Friday night, when an overzealous fan got too close for comfort.
According to TMZ, it began when a random patron shoved a phone with a bright light into DeRozan’s face.
A video of the incident then picks up what happens next as Deroxan appears to knock the phone out of the man’s hand. He’s then seen lying on the floor of the restaurant with DeRozan hovering over him during the heated confrontation, as yelling can be heard from both parties.
A woman then gets between them after pleading for him to let go, repeatedly looking in Derozan’s direction, and yelling, “He’s not worth it.”
“I’m a big fan,” the man yells as he attempts to get his phone after it was knocked to the ground.
The altercation appeared to end there, but TMZ confirmed that the authorities were involved, as cops responded to a call made around 10:30 pm. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has since opened an investigation.
New footage corroborating the eyewitness account began floating around on social media from an account, dubbed the “Homeless Comedian,” claiming to be the man DeRozan attacked.
It shows him shoving a phone’s camera light into DeRozan’s face while saying, “DeMar, they trying to kick me out for no reason.” The NBA player then appears to lunge for the phone before the altercation escalates.
The man who appeared to be trolling Derozan reportedly left in an ambulance, though no charges or injuries have been announced.
The Sacramento Kings have yet to release a statement about the incident, but see how social media is reacting below.
