DK Metcalf was already having a pretty good offseason, signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers after requesting a trade from the Seattle Seahawks. He became one of the highest-paid receivers in the league (behind current leader Minnesota Vikings star Justin Jefferson) with a $150M contract over five years.
But at the press conference announcing him as a Steeler, his contract wasn’t the biggest news. When a reporter asked if he’d proposed, Metcalf, 27, said with a wide smile, “Yessir.” He then pointed to his girlfriend-turned-fiancee, former Fifth Harmony singer Normani, 28, and said, “She right there. Hold that rock up, baby.”
Metcalf, explained that he and his bride to be were in Houston for what she thought was a celebration during his sister’s spring break. It turned out it to be her engagement celebration.
As detailed in a Vogue exclusive, it took some planning on Metcalf’s part. After the couple watched the movie Juwanna Mann, where Vivica Fox’s character says she just wants ‘flowers on a Wednesday’ he started sending the former Fifth Harmony singer flowers every Wednesday with a letter detailing a fairy tale romance.
Last week that fairy tale came true when the final letter included flowers that had the final chapter in the story saying ‘Will you marry me?’
Normani says she had no idea a proposal was coming. “Oh my goodness, honestly, I knew absolutely nothing,” she told Vogue. “As oblivious as oblivious can get, that was pretty much me.”
Normani and Metcalf started dating in 2020. Though they were recently photographed at Beyonce and Jay-Z’s post-Oscars Gold Party they’ve kept their relationship mostly private.
Metcalf’s then-teammate Russell Wilson and his wife, Ciara introduced them, and the couple was shown celebrating the engagement in a Facetime call that Ciara shared on TikTok.
Normani is currently supporting her album release Dopamine, released last year. Her new movie, Freaky Tales co-starring Pedro Pascal, the late Angus Cloud and Tom Hanks comes out April 4. The NFL’s official team activities, or OTA’s, start on May 13. Looks like Pittsburgh will be the couple’s in-season home for at least the next five years.
