Before Ja Morant’s gun-toting and finger-waving behavior, there was Gilbert Arenas.Â
Arenas was the Golden State Warriors‘ 31st pick in 2001, but he really began to make a name for himself once he was traded to the Washington Wizards, earning the nickname Agent Zero.
However, it all got upended when he brought a gun to the arena to confront teammate Javaris Crittenton over a gambling disagreement and nearly had a showdown in the locker room.
Now, nearly 15 years later, after much hearsay and public controversy, Netflix is scheduled to release a documentary on the career pivoting moment, Untold: Shooting Guard, on May 6.
“What really went down between Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton? This exposé unpacks how a gambling dispute led to guns drawn in an NBA locker room,” reads the synopsis.Â
In the newly released one-minute trailer, Arenas admits he’s a habitual line stepper known for taking jokes too far but pays close attention to Crittenton, who suffered the brunt of the consequences.Â
“They said, ‘Don’t get caught up in Gilbert Arenas’ antics.’ But he made threats to my life and said something off the wall. You keep talking about fighting, I play with guns,” Crittenton says in the trailer.
In back-and-forth interviews, both former Wizards broke down what really happened in the locker room for the first time. The situation ended with Arenas serving a suspension for the remainder of the season and a two-year probation, but eventually rejoining the league.Â
Crittenton received the short end of the stick, though, as he pleaded guilty and was given a year of probation on a misdemeanor gun possession charge.Â
His basketball career never got back on track. He played a five-game stint in China before returning to the G League. But that opportunity dried up when he was arrested in 2011 for manslaughter charges, and after serving 10 years, he was released in 2023. Now, he’s ready to tell his story.Â
Below, see how social media is reacting to one of the biggest scandals in NBA history finally getting the documentary treatment.
