Boooooy, President Joe Biden just can not catch a break.
The Biden campaign has already been looking more and more doomed by the day given his universally-dragged-through-the-mud debate performance against Donald Trump last month, and the fact that Trump got the perfect photo-op after he was shot at on the campaign trail last week. Things have gotten so bad for Biden that a new poll from the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows nearly two-thirds of Democrats want the incumbent to step aside and let the party choose a different nominee while 70% of Americans, including nearly half of Democrats, said they were not confident that he had the mental capacity to be president.
Now, on top of all that, Biden has contracted COVID.
According to USA Today, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement that Biden tested positive for COVID-19 following a campaign event in Las Vegas Wednesday.
“He is vaccinated and boosted, and he is experiencing mild symptoms,” Jean-Pierre said.
This is the third time Biden has contracted the virus, and it doesn’t help him at all at a time when voters, pundits and politicians on both sides of the aisle are persistently questioning whether the 81-year-old is spry and healthy enough to sit in the Oval Office for another four years. Still, the White House is working hard to assure the public that Biden will be fine and that he is still in this race.
From Today:
Biden will return to his home in Delaware, where he will self-isolate, Jean-Pierre said. “The White House will provide regular updates on the president’s status as he continues to carry out the full duties of the office while in isolation,” she said.
Biden gave a thumbs up to reporters from the window of his presidential vehicle as his motorcade arrived at the tarmac at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas to head to Delaware. He did not wear a face mask as he boarded Air Force One.
“Good,” Biden said when asked how he was feeling. “I feel good.”
Due to the positive COVID test, Biden had to cancel several speaking engagements in Nevada, including the annual conference of UnidosUS, which Today described as “the nation’s largest Latino civil rights organization.”
“Regrettably, I was just on the phone with President Biden, and he shared his deep disappointment at not being able to join us this afternoon. The president has been at many events as we all know, and just tested positive for COVD,” said Janet Murguía, president and CEO of UnidosUS. “We understand that he needs to take the precautions that have been recommended, and he did not obviously want to put anybody at risk.”
Yeah, regardless of how fast he recovers from his latest bout with COVID, Biden and his campaign are looking down bad.
Get well soon, Mr. President, and good luck!
