One of the biggest conundrums of being a sneakerhead is deciding when to wear a pair frequently or keep them on ice to preserve them because you never know when they’ll retro again.
If you opt for the latter, the coveted pair will make its way to the bottom of the pile and eventually the back of the closet, not to be seen for a while.
Unfortunately, that “while” can sometimes be years, and the next time they’re laced up, they crumble from not being worn in so long. This is a frequent occurrence for sneakerheads, but it’s even worse for Kai Cenat because it happened during an interview with over 1.5 million views.
The streamer sat with Shannon Sharpe for an episode of his Club Shay Shay podcast when the midfoot strap from his Nike Air Yeezy 2 “Red Octobers” fell off.
The embarrassing moment comes around the video’s one hour and 15-minute mark, ironically seconds after Cenat admits he doesn’t wear Alo and Puma but would rather wear Nike shoes and gear, which led to his partnership with them.
“Oh my gosh, damn,” he says as he picks up the strap.
Sharpe didn’t hesitate to roast Cenat’s crumbling kicks and hilariously started referring to them as fakes.
“Did we get that?” Sharpe asks his cameraman. “He got on some fake Yeezys. He got on some Peezys. Those aren’t Yeezys.”
Cenat jokingly brushes off the fake accusations, telling Sharpe he got them from Cool Kicks, a well-known sneaker shop in Los Angeles. He also points to the peeling on the polyurethane midsole, common from normal wear and tear from many of the earlier Jordan models, which the Yeezy midsole resembles.
One of the most hyped sneakers in recent memory, Kanye West debuted the “Red October” on an episode of Saturday Night Live in 2013, ahead of Yeezus‘ release. The sneakers were eventually released in very limited quantities the following year and have remained a holy grail for many, as evidenced by their $9,734 to $50,012 price range on GOAT.
