NYPD Detective Melissa Mercado

As the largest police force in the country, the NYPD remains one of the most scrutinized, and its latest blunder only adds to a long list of infractions.

Only this time, it’s not about the testy relationship between the city they serve or an abuse of power, but rather a scantily clad detective named Melissa Mercado. As part of the Special Victims Division  — which investigates sex crimes— Mercado was featured in a music video for rapper S-Quire’s track “Doin That.”

The video dropped about a month ago and shows the Mercado in a bra and thong as she twerks on the stage at a strip club. Another scene shows her in lingerie and giving the New York-based rapper a lap dance while getting dollar bills showered on her.

Currently sitting at 2 million views on WorldStar Hip-Hop’s YouTube page, a few unwanted eyes —like fellow cops— may have seen her performance, and according to TMZ, she’s been removed from any active sex crime cases pending further disciplinary actions.

“It’s just a bad look,” said one who spoke to the NY Daily News. “She puts the department in a bad light, and there’s gotta be consequences. If she wants to dance so much, she should just be doing that.”

The seven-year NYPD veteran hasn’t explicitly broken any rules. Still, her higher-ups are reportedly making sure that she filed proper paperwork to allow her to do gigs outside of her police duties, which already earn her $144,000 annually.

S-Quire and Picture Perfect, the video’s director, spoke to TMZ Hip-Hop, which praised Mercado for her professionalism and said they hired her from a casting agency.

Picture Perfect, a longtime WorldStar executive, is also the man behind Cardi B‘s “Bodak Yellow” video but says that even before Mercado was outed as a cop, the video proved to be one of the fastest-growing videos he’s ever directed.

According to NYPD records, Mercado joined the force in 2018 and worked out of the Bronx’s 50th precinct before working in the Special Victims Bureau and other specialized units. This past January, she took a post with the Bronx Special Victims Department.

As we await a possible punishment for Mercado, see how social media debates her side gig below.
