After nearly two years, Odell Beckham Jr.’s lawsuit with Nike has finally been resolved.
The wide receiver took to Instagram with a celebratory message. While he didn’t outright say the courts ruled in his favor, he made it seem like the endless hours in the courtroom were a success. In the photo, he’s flanked by his legal team, many of whom are smiling, and another photo of a Young Thug meme.
“JUST DOā¦ā¦RIGHT @nike . I wanna take this moment to thank God first and foremost thank you Heavenly Father. I wanna thank my team for every hour they have spent preparing on this case,” reads the caption. “I wanna thank the jury for simply doing whatās right in a world full of wrong⦠my message to whoever needs this is, STAND UP FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN! JUSTICE WAS SERVED!!!”
It sounds like he was victorious, right?
Well, Nike entered the chat –via a statement to Complex— to clarify what actually went down and that neither side was awarded a single cent.
āWith this verdict, all of Mr. Beckhamās claims have been decided against him without any monetary award,” reads the statement. “The decision confirmed that Nike complied with its commitments. Nike is grateful to the jury and the Court for their careful attention to this case.ā
According to the Portland Business Journal, the Oregon jury deliberated for just a few hours and ultimately found that Nike never breached its contract.
Back in 2022, Beckham announced he was suing Nike because the brand āfailed to live up to its promises.” He alleged that after turning down an adidas deal, Nike’s contract language was altered, Nike suppressed sales, and it was structured to make it very hard for him to trigger certain royalties.
Plus, the swoosh failed to gift him cleats that matched his uniform, so he commissioned his own customs. However, because he altered official gear, Nike was reportedly withholding a payment of more than $2 million.
