Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl performance was full of memeable moments, including everything from his devilishly staring into the camera as he named dropped Drake and the guests he brought along for the ride.
Aside from SZA and Samuel L. Jackson playing Uncle Sam, the biggest surprise was fellow Compton native Serena Williams.
The tennis legend stood on a makeshift light pole platform, and crip walked while K. Dot performed ‘Not Like Us,’ where he advised Drake not to speak her name.
The two share Drake as a common enemy as he’s been throwing thinly veiled shots at her for over a decade, which culminated in him mentioning her husband Alexis Ohanian on ‘Middle Of The Ocean,’ rapping, “Sidebar, Serena, your husband a groupie/He claim we don’t got a problem but/ No, boo, it is like you comin’ for sushi.”
Some fans felt funny about Williams dancing on Drake’s proverbial grave, including Stephen A. Smith, who said he’d divorce his wife if she felt the need to troll her ex.
“If I’m married, and my wife is going to troll her ex—go back to his ass,” he said. “Because clearly, you don’t belong with me. What you worried about him for—and you with me?”
Now, Williams’ husband Ohanian has spoken out about the Super Bowl performance –which had a record 126 million viewers— and he’s cool with it because crip walking represents something she received backlash for after defeating Maria Sharapova in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
“Some of y’all have no idea how criticized Serena was for this same dance at Wimbledon 13 years ago, and it shows,” he tweeted. “This is bigger than the music.”
While Williams was able to crip walk without derogatory comments may have been the prevailing reason she performed with Lamar, she also reportedly dated Drake back in 2011 and 2015 when he was often seen courtside at her matches.
