Nearly seven years after his rise (and rapid fall) from grace, Tekashi 6ix9ine is back in the news.

He’s switched up his style from using elements of aggressive Brooklyn drill for a more international sound, but dropping new music isn’t why his name is being floated around—it’s because he’s back behind bars.

At least for the next two weeks or so.

Born Daniel Hernandez, the Brooklyn rapper has been in federal custody for a bit after a Manhattan judge ordered him to be detained beginning Tuesday. According to the Associated Press, his latest arrest was because he had violated the terms of his probation.

Back in 2019, he was labeled the king of snitching, as he was arrested on racketeering and other weapons and drug charges and faced a minimum of 47 years in prison.

But after pleading guilty to nine charges, he served just two years because he’d testified against other members of the Nine Trey gang. And of those two years, only some were served in prison because he was granted house arrest over fears that the COVID-19 virus would be detrimental for him to contract because of his asthma.

In addition to those two years, he was sentenced to five years of supervised release, which meant he had to keep his nose clean even longer, and according to ABC, he’s been unable to do so.

His infractions include taking an unapproved trip to Las Vegas and then lying about it, missing a scheduled drug test and then testing positive for methamphetamine, being arrested on domestic violence charges in the Dominican Republic, and getting a speeding ticket in Florida for driving 198 mph in an unregistered vehicle.

He blamed the out-of-town trip to the T-Mobile arena by saying he’s a performer and it should be considered a job and blamed the failed drug test on Adderall.

After appearing at court Tuesday morning—an hour late because of a flight from Florida—he apologized to the judge but was still ordered to be placed behind bars.

It has not been made clear what happens after Tekashi serves his two-week sentence in the Metropolitan Detention Center, where Diddy is also held.
