In the most lax terms, President Donald Trump is a habitual line-stepper, and his latest attempt may be finessing the 22nd Amendment.
The Constitution limits presidents to only two terms—after Franklin D. Roosevelt overstayed his welcome—and a quick look at Trump’s campaign website shows him selling his infamous red hat with the word “Trump 2028” stitched onto the front. Eric Trump models the $50 hat, and there’s also a matching $36 shirt with the words “Rewrite the Rules” beneath it.
NBC asked White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt about the new merchandise, and she responded, “But it’s a cool hat, and I suspect it will be highly popular!”
Trump isn’t even 100 days into his second term, but during an interview with CNBC in March, he didn’t completely rule out returning to the White House in 2028, simply because the yes men around him are hyping him up.
“A lot of people want me to do it,” Trump said. “But, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it’s very early in the administration.”
Trump went on to say he’s “not joking” about the idea and said, “There are methods” around the two-term limit. He refused to share said methods but agreed with NBC that one way he could snake his way back in is by having trophy dropper and Vice President JD Vance run (and win) on the Republican ticket, then concede power back to Trump and resume his second term as VP.
Scarily enough, earlier this month, Fox asked Vance about his presidential aspirations. While neglecting to give a solid answer, he said he’d have a conversation with Trump first and then, “if we do a good job, the politics take care of themselves.”
Still, all the new red and white merch signaling a MAGA future has social media scared. See the reactions below.
