There’s a new Karen clogging your social media feed, but this time, in addition to getting canceled, the woman in question is also staging a cash grab.
It all began earlier this week when a video posted to social media by Sharmake Omar showed him questioning a white woman at a Rochester, Minnesota, public park for allegedly calling a five-year-old Black kid the N-word.
As he records, she’s holding her toddler son and telling the man to mind his business, and eventually repeats the slur on camera, saying, F-ck you n-gger.”
She says the verbal assault was triggered by the Black kid taking something that belonged to her son, but Omar argues that no matter the kid’s actions, it doesn’t give her the right to call him that.
“If that’s what he’s gonna act like…” she responds as the camera pans to show the kid atop the jungle gym.
Finally, he warns her that she’s spewing hate speech, as she walks away saying, “I don’t give a sh-t… f-ck off” while holding up the middle finger.
The video ends with Omar mentioning the power of the internet, and just that fast, authorities have been involved.
“The Rochester Police Department is aware of the video that was posted on social media and has received multiple calls related to it,” a statement from the local police read, according to NBC. “We are gathering information and actively looking into the matter.”
NBC asked Omar about the video’s context, and he explains the boy has autism and his parents —who are from Somalia— were at the park as well, watching his other three siblings.
Not caught on camera, Omar says the white woman also took aim at him, telling him to stop having kids and taking advantage of the welfare system.
Omar added that the little boy “was visibly upset by the incident.”
The NAACP group in Rochester is now standing behind the child, referring to the incident as “ yet another painful reminder that hate continues to exist.”
His parents are supporting legal action against the woman. Still, now she’s allegedly being rewarded after starting her own crowdfunding campaign on GiveSendGo, where she owned up to her racist behavior.
According to KTTC, the fund raised more than $630,000, with its description reading, “Hello! My name is Shiloh and I have been put into a very dire situation. I recently had a kid steal from my 18-month-old son’s diaper bag at a park. I called the kid out for what he was.”
The NAACP then stepped in on the boy’s behalf, with its own GoFundMe to “Help Us Seek Justice for a 5-Year-Old Facing Racial Hate,” which closed after raising $340,000.
