Social media stars were in attendance at Monday night’s Met Gala.
Streamer Kai Cenat even turned down his invite, but there were several other glaring misses from the blue carpeted steps, and according to social media, that includes Wisdom Kaye.
Kaye, a fashion influencer, attended the 2024 Met Gala, where the exhibit Sleeping Beauties: Rewakening Fashion was themed “The Garden of Time.” He stood out in his rose-inspired Robert Wun look, and afterwards, his social media following continued to rise even more to 13 million on TikTok, so he was expected to double back this year.
But last month, the 24-year-old told his followers he was unsure if he’d be there again when he explained that TikTok helped orchestrate his getting last year’s invite.
“I don’t know if I’m going to the Met Gala. I know I went last year, but guys, you have to understand, the only reason I went last year was because TikTok literally bought a table,” he explained. “I was sitting next to Jack Harlow and Shou Chew, the CEO of this app. That’s the only reason I went there, because they bought a table. I didn’t go because I meet the typical requirements to be someone at the Met Gala.”
Kaye understands that while his fans admire his fashion sense, they sometimes put him on a pedestal. He feels Met Gala should be reserved for A-listers and not so much for influencers, despite Vogue once dubbing him “TikTok’s best-dressed guy.”
“I don’t think they even want social media people there,” he suggested in the video.
Then, the Sunday before the big event, he broke the news to his followers, confirming that he’d not be attending.
“I was not invited to the met, I know you guys wanna see me there so just letting y’all know. Looking forward to seeing all the beautiful interpretations of black dandyism tmrw :),” he tweeted.
His fans were immediately upset at the snub and at how well he would have represented the theme of “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” Kaye’s internet fame is based on his fashion knowledge and ability to seamlessly incorporate inspiration from commenters or pop culture moments into fire fits that work without being too on the nose.
